Our Story

This is the journey of how our little burrito shop, Big Wave, was birthed. The dreamers & entrepreneurs— Mickey & Kate who opened Big Wave, met as teenagers riding their bikes in Cape May just a half a block from Big Wave’s first location.  Mickey was and still is the quintessential local beach surf guy, Kate, the blonde, guitar playing summer girl. After many years of friendship & romance, on the most beautiful sunny Memorial Day weekend in 2008 they tied the knot on the beach in Cape May Point .

Seeking new adventures together, they took off to backpack through Southeast Asia and also lived on the North Shore in Hawaii for a while. It was here where they discovered their love & passion for “rio (acai) bowls.” They vowed to bring them back to their beloved Cape May town. And after traveling the world, they realized there’s no place like home in Cape May. Just like learning to ride the big surf on the North Shore, Mickey has always had great vision in life, to dream, to see & to accomplish that very thing he envisions without hesitation. And that’s just what Mickey & Kate did when they arrived back home. On another beautiful Memorial Day weekend in 2010, their dream was born. Mickey & Kate opened Big Wave Burritos, combining their love of casual, laid back taco/ burrito surfer cuisine with their love for healthy smoothies and açaí bowls. Their sister company, Aloha Smoothie Company was then birthed soon after, the first planted on the Wildwood boardwalk & the second planted on Gurney Street in Cape May.

Kate & Mickey want to thank all of you— their loyal customers because without you— their dream wouldn’t have become a reality. Remember, if you have a dream ..with God ALL things are possible , and no dream is ever too big or too small !
